How the Holy Spirit Is There to Help You Be All You Were Meant to Be

New Christians need to come to a place of fully appreciating the Holy Spirit. God expresses Himself as the Father; God the Savior, Jesus; and the Holy Spirit, which indwells the life of every Christian.

How much you need to fully sense His presence in your life! To open yourself up to the Holy Spirit is to let God fully flood into your life. Without the Holy Spirit’s power all of us are inadequate and powerless.

The early Christians were fully aware of the role that the Holy Spirit played in the Christian life. Constantly in the book of Acts we read the Holy Spirit gave them boldness and great power and supernatural wisdom. But also the Holy Spirit brought great or “much joy” to them. Become familiar with the fruits of the Spirit; that is, the planned product of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life. Let’s then examine the exciting possibilities of which the Bible speaks.

Jesus called the Holy Spirit our silent helper who would never draw attention to Himself but instead point people to Jesus. (John 15:16)

Let us fully appreciate this Person Jesus predicted that He would send in His place. Let us come to know Him who can supply supernaturally what we lack. Let us welcome Him who can transform human nature.

Notice, I have emphasized that the Holy Spirit is a person, not a thing or an “it.” Jesus spoke of Him as a “he.” Therefore, He is not an impersonal force but the divine spirit of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is God Himself. So we could say God the Father is the source of all blessings; Jesus , the Son, is the channel of all blessings; but it is the Holy Spirit who is the conveyer of all God’s blessings into our lives.

Today the Holy Spirit is active, and He desires to involve us to accomplish God’s purpose, but without His assistance we totally fail in the purpose God has for our lives. So, we need Him in His fullness.

The Holy Spirit enlightens the Christian’s mind, and He indwells our bodies. He comforts us. (Acts 9:31) He guides us. (John 16:13) He sets us apart. (Romans 15:16) And He helps us in weakness. (Romans 8:26) He gives us a desire to tell others of Jesus. (Acts 1:8)

Think of it this way: In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit came upon believers and remained for a period of time; in the New Testament the Holy Spirit was with the believers; but now the Holy Spirit is in believers.

It was the Holy Spirit that drew us to Christ, and that gave us new birth. At that point all Christians should be told to be constantly filled with the Holy Spirit. The word filled literally means “dominated by or under the complete control of” the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18) The Bible literally says, “keep on being filled with the Holy Spirit.” It is the idea of continuous progressive action.

The purpose is that only those who are filled with the Holy Spirit will glorify Christ. (John 16:14) Embrace the truth—only in the power of the Spirit can we live a life that honors God as He intended.

In order to be filled with the Holy Spirit, we are told to “yield yourselves to God.” We could use the words “submit everything” or “place yourself at His disposal.” That is the secret.

In time, you will discover God’s Spirit has given you a gift or gifts to be used for God’s glory. God’s supernatural gifts are for the work of service (Ephesians 4:12 ) and for the common good of all God’s people (I Corinthians 12:7). Discover your gift! Then actively use it.

As I already indicated, there is also the fruit of the Spirit—nine are mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23. When the Holy Spirit fills us, we will discover not only our gift, but He will produce and bring forth fruit; which is simply a Christ-likeness that others see.

We must be desirous and ready for the Spirit to fill and use us and never live below the norm of the New Testament pattern, which is the Spirit-filled Christian. From the very start of your new life in Christ passionately desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
